“Dry-Ice Queens of Womyn’s Music” (Artist Talk) : Saturday August 25th, 1pm
Step into a hypercolour simulated landscape at La Centrale galerie Powerhouse as resident artists, Lezbians on Ecstasy (L.O.E.), erect a set for their ongoing rock opera project entitled Amphitheatre of Homosexuality. The installation will expand upon the visual thematics of the Amphitheatre, which was first launched in the spring of 2007 at the Montréal International Biennale. This interactive work-in-progress at La Centrale is framed in projected, plastic images of nature and an ever present, all seeing-eye that will blink, twitch and oversee the dénouement.
Join the happening and leztopian sing-along on August 22nd as L.O.E. riff on acoustic impulses. The public is invited to join band members at 1pm on August 25th, 2007, for an open discussion regarding their work and the dissonance between modern and past feminist realities in music. Glowsticks, marshmallows, popcorn and Kool-Aid will be served at each event.
BIOGRAPHY :
Subverting and perverting, Lezbians on Ecstasy (L.O.E.) are a plunder music project, taking inspiration from the lesbian back catalogue and transforming the dance floor into a politically and conceptually loaded space. Sampling heavily from iconic lesbian voices, their insistence on a strong technological presence in their music serves to highlight the absence of technology in the majority of lesbian music, which privileges acoustic sound as authentic lesbian expression. Their current artistic practice explores the idealism and optimism present in early feminist theory and music and examines the ways in which these themes have disintegrated today.
