Tips on Getting Involved

Don’t be Intimidated
I know jumping into the fray can seem like a daunting task. Especially if you are a youth and you are entering into an organization or place that does not appear to have a lot of youth around. Don’t be afraid though – you’ll learn the ropes and earn your stripes. Until you find you confidence and balance, employ this little phrase “act as if…”. Not feeling confident? Well act as if you are. This little phrase can carry you through any uncomfortable moment! Also, check out our article
"Not a leader? No problem!".
Always check for a “Links” Tab
Maximize the power of Google. Then, when shopping around for an organization or group to join, always check for a “links” tab which could point you to some other groups or organizations which may fit what you are looking for.
Go Old School and Volunteer
Not everyone starts with a paying position in an organization. Sometimes the best way is to start slow and find something that you are really dedicated to and stick with it. Here are a few other sites which could help you out:
new.volunteer.ca/en
This is a massive database of volunteering opportunities and it also has a lot of beginner tips about getting involved.
Charity Village
charityvillage.com/cv/main.asp
A place where you can search for volunteering/work opportunities in your town.
Check your local school/university job bank for postings
Organizations often post opportunities on these places as well as their websites. Don’t worry about attending the school either, that’s just a minor detail!
Be Patient
Patience is the highest virtue. If you have a hard time finding an opportunity that is right for you, just keep at it and you will find something one day.
Contact the Government
At every level! Check on government websites as well as with your municipality to see what is new and cookin'.
Ask Friends
Trust the opinions of people you meet. If you hear or even read about a great experience someone had or just generally hear about a cool new initiative, follow up and find out more.
