BLOG: Best. Job. Ever.
by Kelta Coomber from Apathy is Boring — July 3, 2009
It's not often that one gets paid to do something they truly love.

First jobs are expected to be painful and "character-building" but never enjoyable or interesting. Thankfully, however, that's not been my experience as an Apathy is Boring intern. I've been lucky enough to have a job that makes me feel inspired, happy and challenged. Cheesy, but true.
Apathy is Boring was perfect from the beginning (and no, I'm not being paid to say this). I entered the office on my first day to find the wonderful Marketing Coordinator, Lisa, standing with her bike and smiling so brightly. I instantly felt at ease and excited for the day to come. I remember walking into Ilona's office (the Executive Director of Apathy is Boring) to find out what exactly I would be doing. Instead of telling me my responsibilities and tasks, she ASKED me what I was interested in and what I wanted to do. Imagine that! I was able to basically create a job description for myself!
Now some may ask what exactly does one do, working at a charity? Do you wear an itchy red vest and talk to people on the street? Do you become some sort of underground freedom fighter marching in protests and burning cars on your days off? Do you even get paid? Well, it's hard to articulate.
Basically, my job has consisted of hanging out with the raddest ladies ever, all day and everyday (no hyperbole). I've done photo archiving (and almost got carpal tunnel). I've seen Joel Plaskett and the Black Eyed Peas ( by the way, buy both of their albums if you haven't already). I've worked on the INCREDIBLE Youth Friendly program, which works with and trains organizations to become more "youth friendly" and incorporate youth into their organization through the Youth Friendly Guide, presentations, workshops, facilitation and consultation services. Working on content for this program day in and day out has made me feel so inspired.
What is more, the people here are amazing. Everyone is so hardworking and committed; but they are also clever, hilarious and kind! No idea is shutdown because creativity and innovation is valued. Everyone has a different background- whether it be in dance, photography, art history, or business- and this makes collaborative working so interesting and exciting. Sadly, my time here has come to a close. I have had so much fun and I've really loved getting to spend my days in such a positive environment.
Thanks to the entire crew- Ilona, Lisa, Genevieve, Alison, Marika, Sylvia, Lana and Vanessa. Your number one fan is just a hop and a skip away in Edmonton so keep me posted.
